Fire in the Sky

My mother is a funny duck, but I love her dearly. She is a master at making mountains out of molehills. I've learned over the years to take what she says with a grain of salt. You can only run to your grandmother's deathbed so many times before you start to call other people to get the real news so you don't make another needless trip to Arizona because grandma needed an enema.

So eight years ago when my answering machine clicked on in the morning (Before our children were in school our morning rarely started before 10 am. Those were the days.) and the sound of my mother's voice screaming "Get out of Boulder City! There gonna blow up the dam!" I giggled and hugged the pillow over my head and ignored the crazy talk. She hung up and called back. "Mary? Are you there? Are you guys okay? Mary!! Mary!!" I got up and went to the phone. "I'm okay mom, what's really going on??" I rolled my eyes and rubbed the sleep out of them. " Their attacking us! We're at war! Get out of Boulder City, that dam is next, there gonna blow it up! Turn on T.V. see for yourself." This sounded serious so I stumbled over to the t.v. just in time to see the plane dive into the second tower. I dropped the phone "MIKE!!!!" I bawled in horror...

Nope.. I'll never ever forget!

crazy to believe it has been that long already!
Like it was yesterday...yes, this day will never be forgotten.
Our stories are similar.
My B Team children were young. We were enjoying a glorious morning in Northern Wisconsin, and it took a frantic call from an oft-panicked friend to alert me.
The TV was on in our house FOR DAYS after the attack. We hoped for the discovery of survivors and swift justice for our enemies.
You're right; we will never forget.
I woke up & my roommate called me into her room. I watched for a little bit, but still groggy and still being basically a kid, I didn't get it. I took Hillary with me try on wedding dresses that day. I was wedding dress shopping!! It started to sink in throughout the day. We ourselves made a frantic call to a girlfriend who was working as a stewardess at the time. She was fine, at home in Chicago. We met Chris for lunch in downtown SLC. He was meeting with the jeweler about my ring. Neither of us told the other what we were doing that day, we both just happened to have those things planned. We ate lunch at the New York Burrito (if you've never been to one, they are fabulous). Later that afternoon I picked up a few things at Walmart. They were playing the news over the loudspeaker so you could listen while you shopped. It was all very somber. That night I went to work at a mexican restaurant. It was epecially slow. Can't imagine why.

I was getting ready for work, had the news on just like always. While drying my hair Erik yelled at me to come see this, just as I walked in the room I saw the plane go into the second tower. I still get the chills talking about it. Our lives were forever changed that day.

I turned the TV on while getting ready for work just as the second plane hit. Once I got to school, every teacher was watching it with their classes. At some point, my husband came in and we sat in the back of the room watching together. Thank goodness for the strength that comes from family, friends and community.
