Diary of a Makeup Artist #28 "Get Back to Where you once belonged"

In December I had an interesting job offer come my way.  It was so very exciting and so very very scary.  I was asked to be a personal hair and makeup artist for a politician running for a major campaign for 2010.  Rather than being excited about this high compliment, I was very numb to it.  Truly every makeup artist wants to be wanted on a full time basis by someone of stature.  To travel and have their subject in the limelight and the money... the money's not so bad I'll tell ya.  But this also meant giving up my personal life and 90% of my time with my family.  Ouch!  So when I was asked to put a price on my life for one year, I really had to put things into perspective.  Because it becomes a balance of "how bad do you want the job" vs. "how long can you be away from your family and lose your business".  Now put a fair number on that....

The makeup artist in me was excited and willing to bargain for the glorious job and money, and would just be devastated if the opportunity slipped away.  The wife/mother in me put a very high price on my personal life and my family and the fear that they might actually accept the offer was great.  The makeup artist lost in this bid on life...  The wife/mother is quite relieved.

The process of putting numbers on your life is a very eye opening experience.  I know my family is my most valuable possession, priceless.  But losing my business I've built for 10 years...... I was sort of .. like I said... numb...

The one thing I gained was a new focus.  A focus on what is important, what I'm good at and what is working and what is not.  Because the makeup artist lost, so she's decided to become a better business woman.  This means focusing on a business that, when I put a price on it and shook off the numbness,  made me realize it really does have value to our family.  This poor business has been sorely neglected the last year and a half.  In this down economy, I think I just sort of gave up and let the chips fall where they may so to speak.  My marketing is way off.  I've worked on everyone else's websites but my own.  My kit is despicable and tattered.  My business cards are cheap and shameful.  And my google standing is pathetic.  I'm really good at this business dang it, why am I so far off track?

The wife/mother in me realized that, that makeup artist hasn't been such a bad contributor to our family financial needs.  She can really help improve some things around here.  So she needs to stop whining get her gusto back and start providing more for this family again....

I'm gonna "GET BACK" to where I belong...  so  I've been working on my new site, its gonna be stellar and blow the competition to bits.. Here is a great version of Get Back.  I loved this movie as a kid....

I dare you to put a price on your life, I think you'll be so happy to see the value within your reach..! And "Get Back to Where You Once Belonged"

What an intriguing question! I don't make millions being a teacher, but I knew that going into it.

If you don't mind, I may use this idea on my own blog.

I'm sure you are happy with your decision. It just confirms my picture of you. Have a wonderful journey "getting back!"

I was wondering what had happened with your bid. Glad the wife/mother is happy and I know good things are coming for the business woman too because you're awesome like that!

I love the attitude of getting yourself to where you feel that you should be. I need to adopt that.

John Lennon will always be my favorite Beatle!
